CASE 06: THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY
Bushranger Infantry Mobility Vehicle Supportability Analysis completed using Reliability-centred Maintenance
The challenge: The Bushranger IMV is a completely new Australian designed and built troop carrying vehicle which is now seeing service in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor. The Army required the contractor to complete a comprehensive review of support requirements without conducting a full-scale Logistic Support Analysis. RCM 2 was chosen as the central analytical tool with The Asset Partnership providing facilitation throughout the exercise.
The approach: The Supportability Analysis Programme included:
- Performing an RCM II analysis on the vehicle through a series of ten, ten-day workshops, facilitated by The Asset Partnership RCM II practitioner utilising a team comprising Commonwealth, Contractor and OEM staff
- Developing the asset catalogue in the RCM Toolkit software, enabling each analysis to be tracked
- Completion of the operating context for each system and subsystem
Using the RCM Toolkit's Maintenance Task Development Module, maintenance tasks identified during the analysis phase were bundled appropriately to form workshop schedules. This required the completion of detailed task descriptions with skills, parts and tool requirements, and identification of safety and environmental rules surrounding vehicle operations and maintenance activities.
The outcome:
- Operator and Maintainer maintenance schedules including task completions times
- A range of inputs for development of the User Handbook and Workshop Manual
- Identification of training packages for Operators and Maintainers
- Comprehensive Level of Repair Analysis
- Identification of supporting spare parts, tools and test equipment
- Identification of safety and environmental issues relating to vehicle operation and maintenance
